MAD about Star Wars

Right off the bat, I must confess that I'm not the biggest MAD Magazine fan. Having said that, by no means am I a hater. It's just that their brand of humor is usually "hit or miss" with me. Hence, some of their gags will leave me laughing so hard that my stomach hurts and I have tears in my eyes, while others make me wonder who the hell can find this even remotely funny.

When I received my review copy of MAD about Star Wars, I was aware that, even though I'm a lifelong Star Wars fan, the jokes contained within would probably leave me wanting some more, or utterly cold. The book is an interesting project, no doubt. Thirty years of classic parodies is no small feat.

As is habitually the case, MAD about Star Wars was hit or miss with me. I thoroughly enjoyed some of the stuff, especially the older parodies. They bring us back to another era, and it's nice to have this opportunity to turn back the clock and read the parodies that mocked the movies which marked my childhood in such a profound way.

Some of the covers were fantastic. The spoof that combined elements from Return of the Jedi and The A-Team, with Mr. T as Darth Vader is priceless!

All in all, though to some degree it might still be of interest to the casual fan, I reckon that MAD about Star Wars will only appeal to the aficionados of the Star Wars phenomenon.

Nevertheless, feel free to flip through its pages at your local bookstore, for it's sure to bring a chuckle or two out of you!:-)

The final verdict: 7/10
